PROJECT OVERVIEW
The FV Excellent was one of the oldest fishing vessels in the UK and had laid alongside the Newlyn Harbour Quay after being decommissioned. Since the1930’s the FV Excellent had a busy working life along the Cornish coast and a short stint in wartime service.
CHALLENGES
Newlyn Harbour is one of the largest fishing ports in the UK and can accommodate many fishing vessels, however access by road is restricted by the narrow roads leading to the port and the historic quay is quite a small area to work from for our salvage machines and trucks.
PROJECT SCOPE
The 75ft wooden fishing vessel had fallen into disrepair after a long life in service, we were tasked with dismantling the vessel from the harbour and removing all debris for safe disposal, leaving the waterways clear.
OUTCOMES
We were able to remove the structure, all arising debris and any pollutants from the vessel, deploying a floating boom to contain everything as our machines carefully removed sections of the vessel, leaving the quayside clear and ready accept new vessels and continue thriving as a busy port.
OUR APPROACH
We mobilised our own in-house dedicated ship breaking equipment including heavy duty scrap shears and long reach (radius and depth) high capacity grab machines to remove the vessel. Although the FV Excellent was a wooden boat many items like the keel and other strong sections needed cutting plus there were many items of metal that required cutting to separate before loading away. The heavy duty grab machines particularly proved their worth when lifting out the engine which weighed 10 tonnes.
